Fidelity Bank employees joined members of the community to break ground on the Samuel J. Wornom Community Shelter, a new facility that will provide housing and support for the homeless in Lee County. This shelter, set to open in 2025, will offer 76 beds, family rooms, and essential amenities, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for those in need.
After years of fundraising and preparation, ground was officially broken for the new homeless shelter in Sanford. Members of community leadership, both past and present, including the current Mayor of Sanford, Rebecca Salmon and former Sanford Mayor, Chet Mann, were on hand for the breaking ground ceremony. Members of Fidelity Bank, Phil Woodard, Regional Executive; David Craven, Market Executive; and Linda Berryman, Senior Business Development Officer, were also in attendance.
The new shelter will be located at 507 S. Third Street in Sanford and will have the ability to serve 30 men, 30 women, and four families. The shelter will be 8,500 square-feet and replace the two current shelters located in buildings that are more than 100 years old. The cost of the new shelter is projected to be around $2.8 million. Fidelity Bank is among the donors who are supporting the construction of the shelter.
